Background and Philosophy
I am constantly amazed and inspired by the human voice and its range of expressive capabilities. Being raised in a musical family, this interest probably began at birth, but the passion was really sparked while in high school chorus. My first voice teacher told me that I would be a good voice teacher one day because I am very analytical. In a very nice way, she also told me that I would be a good teacher because of the vocal issues that I had to overcome, and I believe she was right in both cases.
While my undergraduate degree is in Music Education, I took extra courses that were required for performance majors, including Voice Pedagogy. This led me to pursuing a Master of Music Degree in Voice Pedagogy/Performance at Westminster Choir College, where I studied with respected pedagogues Scott McCoy and Marvin Keenze. This opened up a new world of performing opportunities in school, as well as after graduation, when I moved to New York City.
During my time in New York, I worked with a few different teachers and coaches, who were very influential to my development as a performer. I also did a great deal of performing, from opera and operetta to recitals and oratorio, as well as professional choral singing. I also had private teaching studios in Connecticut and New Jersey.
Family, as well as a desire to teach on the college level, prompted my move back to Georgia. I began teaching at Piedmont College in 2009 and completed my DMA in Voice Performance in 2014. I now teach at Piedmont College and The Lovett School, in addition to private teaching in Demorest and Atlanta. In 2017, I completed Levels I-III of Jeanie LoVetri's Somatic Voicework™️, and I apply those principles in my teaching and my singing.
